Stagecoach Days 1st Annual BBQ Competition 2015

Banning, CA

June 19-20, 2015

By Sylvie Curry

A new event to BBQ Competitions this year was the 1st Annual Stagecoach Days in Banning, CA. This is the hometown of three teams well known in the BBQ circuit, Left Coast Q, Mar-B-Q and Porterhouse BBQ team. In support of the Banning community, twenty six other teams joined the hometown teams in Dysart Park for this KCBS sanctioned and CBBQA TOY event.

In addition to the BBQ competition, there was a Jam/Jelly contest, horseshoe tournament, live music, a beer and wine garden, Kid’s Que contest and BBQ tastings provided by some of the finest Pitmasters.

A few teams started arriving as early as Thursday afternoon to set up their sites while others came Friday. Teams wanting to participate in the BBQ tastings on Saturday were arranged on the upper section of the park where the entertainment and visitors would be. Other teams were located in the lower area of the park. Each team had plenty of space with easy access to the judging area.

Cooks meeting started at 5:30 pm with BBQ contest organizer, Henry Silvestre welcoming the teams and introducing the KCBS representatives Ian Schmidt and Julie Poe. Stagecoach Days organizers thanked the teams for participating and added another prize for the potential Grand Champion. This was a bottle of an exceptional alcoholic beverage to be autographed by each team present.

After the cooks meeting, Thom Emery organized a pot luck dinner for all teams wishing to bring a dish and afterwards view the movie, Chef. Some teams attended a shrimp boil hosted by Steph Franklin. The evening was very pleasant once the sun went down and as always with BBQ family everyone enjoyed hanging out before firing up the pits.

Saturday morning was all business and staying “on the plan” cooking the four meats. First turn in was at noon for chicken, 12:30pm for ribs, 1:00pm for pork and 1:30pm for brisket. With temps of 100 plus degrees outside, there weren’t any problems keeping meats warm while loading the boxes for presentation to the judges. Finishing that last box and watching it head to the judges tent signals a ‘whew’ moment and it’s out of my hands now. Onto cleanup and anticipation of the awards ceremony scheduled for later that afternoon.

Henry Silvestre announced the winners with Banning’s Stagecoach Days princesses handing out the awards. After the announcement of the top 10 chicken, rib and pork winners, a couple of teams were standing out as GC contenders. The top 10 brisket winners made it tougher to clue in on who would be on top. By the time, the overall 3rd though 10th places were announced, it was down to two teams. Both Mar-B-Que and Big Poppa Smokers had three calls but one of them had a 1st place call in pork to place them in the Grand Champion spot- Big Poppa Smokers with Mar-B-Que the Reserve Grand Champion. Of note is that Banning’s three hometown competitors finished 2nd, 3rd and 4th place overall. Great showing!

Thank you Banning planning committee for hosting this event, KCBS representatives, judges and promoter Henry Silvestre. Special thanks to the guys from the city of Banning who worked many hours to assure we had good electrical power.
