The great members of the California BBQ Association work year long raising funds

4th Santa Anita Winners Circle, Arcadia, CA

One of the best venues for a BBQ Competition in Southern California is the Santa Anita Racetrack in Arcadia, CA. The promoters, Ben Lobenstein and Ric Gilbert brought the event back for the 4th year with the support of Santa Anita Racetrack administrators and sponsor MAK Grills.

With a $15,000 prize package, many teams signed up early in December. It wasn’t until two days before the event that a team list was posted with 103 teams listed. This would be the largest BBQ event in California history with many seasoned competitors as well as rookie teams wanting to experience cooking in the middle of the racetrack infield with a view of million dollar horses exercising during the early morning and racing during the day. At the cooks meeting Friday evening, it was also announced that this is the only BBQ Competition documented as held inside a world renowned racetrack.

To protect the grassy race track, teams unable to enter the track through the tunnels lined up Thursday evening to cross a bridge built for a couple of hours specifically for the event. Approximately 48 teams in RVs, campers and trailers lined up by 4:30 pm and were escorted across the bridge and loaded into the infield by 7:30 pm. Friday morning the KCBS Reps, Ian Schmidt, Julie Poe, Steve and Merrialyce Alvarez, started meat checks and handed out team turn-in boxes. Turn in times were earlier with chicken due at 11:00am, ribs at 11:30am, pork at 12:00noon and brisket at 12:30pm. Kid’s Q turn ins were after the regular four meats. Cooks adjusted their timelines and the competition was on.

The awards ceremony was held at 5:00 pm. The People's Choice winners were announced with 1st place going to Kramer's BBQ for the second year in a role. Second place was won by Twisted Brisket and third place went to Parrain's BBQ.

Final tally of teams was 100. The top ten in each meat category were called. Ryan and Thad Chester of Smoqued took 1st place chicken. Tony P of Big Daddy's Qn Crew took 1st place ribs. A 180 was awarded to the 1st place pork winner, Steve Wilson of The Pit Crew of So Cal. 1st place brisket went to Sylvie Curry, Lady of Q. Going into announcing the top ten overall, there were a few front runners with three calls. Down to the last three call, Big Poppa Smokers was 3rd, RGC went to Knock Ur Sox Off and the Grand Champion was Mike Lindley of Smokin Mo's joining the 700 club with a score of 701.1316. Congratulations to all.

Special thanks to MAK Grills for sponsoring this event. Ric, Ben and Kyle for bringing us the 4th Annual Santa Anita Winners Circle, 103 plus KCBS judges, our KCBS Reps and the Santa Anita staff for making this venue something to remember.
