Ultimate BBQ Showdown, East vs West

Wildomar, CA April 10-11, 2015

Forty-two teams gathered at the Marna O’Brien Park in Wildomar, CA for the Ultimate BBQ Showdown East vs West. It has been a few years since this site was host to this event. As teams arrived they were directed to their sites by Henry Silvestre the competition organizer and promoter. Supporters of the competition were the Rotary Club of Wildomar. All teams were located on the grassy outfield of the park’s baseball fields. Those teams participating in People’s Choice were located nearest to the vendor area and beer garden. Those not participating were placed in a quieter area of the baseball field. KCBS representatives for this event were Kelly and Kathleen McIntosh accompanied by Justice.

As teams set up, got their meats checked and began the preparation process, the Rotary Club was busy in the background getting vendors organized and assisting with site maintenance. Before the cook’s meeting they also graciously sponsored a pizza dinner for all the teams and staff to enjoy.

One of the traditions of this Wildomar competition is the addition of a beef rib category to the traditional four meats. Eighteen teams committed to entering this category. Dinosaur sized beef ribs are the first choice of competitors planning to display these ribs on large platters. Everyone looks forward to seeing what the judges get to sample.

180 Beef Ribs- 2nd Place

Saturday morning the teams arose from a cold night of sleep either to start their hot and fast cook or to check on their low and slow big meats which had been cooking since Friday night. As the morning temperatures began to rise, it was time to get in the “zone”. The last minute touches were added and turn-ins began. The crowds starting arriving around 10 am and they ventured around the PC areas sampling all sorts of BBQ treats and enjoying the attractions. After the last turn-ins, the teams started the process of packing up and getting ready for awards at 5 pm.

Awards started promptly at 5 pm. Henry Silvestre started by announcing the top 6th-10th place teams and inviting the 5th-1st place teams to come get their trophies. Beef ribs were the last category called. It was announced that there were two 180’s in beef ribs. One team received a perfect 999 from all judges and the second place team received less than a 9 from one single judge. Dennis McGrath of Porketeers was the 1st place winner and Matt Dalton, Moe and James Miranda of Left Coast Q received the second place call.

While calls were made in each of the traditional meat categories, there were a number of teams with two to three calls overall. One team with a second in ribs, a first in pork and a first in brisket, no call in chicken looked back at their very first Grand Championship back in 2012 at this very event. Everyone in the audience knew them as the 2013 California Team of the Year who made some cooking process changes in 2014 which made them fall short of a GC in over a year. One other team had a second in chicken, third in pork, second in brisket and no call in ribs. This team was looking for their first big win. Each team not knowing where they placed in that “no call” category knew after the top 3rd-10th place teams were announced either could be the last call.

Thank you to the Rotary Club of Wildomar, Henry Silvestre, Kelly and Kathleen McIntosh and the City of Wildomar for a great event.
