North State Barbeque Championship, Round # 1 June 21, 2014, Redding, CA Win River Casino

By Scott Gomes

It was a perfect morning on the River, that wonderful smell of BBQ smoke swept across the resort and on to the river. Resort guest and Casino goers were being drawn to the RV Park to see where that Sweet smell of smoke was coming from. Teams were busy early and you could feel the anticipation for the first round of the North State Barbeque Championship Series, the NSBC series is a four event three meat BBQ competition featuring, Chicken, Pork Ribs and the California favorite tri-tip with side categories of Chili and Salsa and with an affordable $125 entry fee and the three meat short cook this is a great event for new teams to try their hand at competition BBQ, then add over $10.000 in series prize money. Add in seasoned KCBS veterans like Mary Odor of Big O’s BBQ, David Schmidt of Rolling Bones Traveling BBQ Circus, Kevin Barteaux of Smokey Luv, Dana Myers of Plastered Pig, TMC BBQ and you have a 38 team event. These pitmasters are ready to do battle for the NSBC Series Title!

The judge’s tent was set to go with a mix of certified BBQ judges, veteran Pit Pros, promotions judges and a few local celebrity judges to top things off and all were eager to get started. Master judges Paul and Peggy Brown were rocking their new Win-River Casino T-Shirts and ready to use their free play coupons in the casino. As the first chicken turn-in arrived, you could see teams were eager to kick this event off and we almost had a couple of early entries. After the dust cleared, filling out the top five in chicken was BBQ Bandits at 5th place, followed by Mr. Apple Jacks BBQ in 4th, 3rd place went to a new team Double Trouble Backyard BBQ and 2nd going to BBQ Hazard and our chicken division winner was Pirates of the Pig.

As the temperature rose so did the competition. Next up was Tri-Tip with The Grill Billie’s starting out at 5th. 4th place went to another new team Sierra Smoke Pit BBQ followed by Mary Odor of Big O’s BBQ in 3rd place. Mary was running the team today with Alan out of town (Look out Alan!). 2nd place went to once again another new team Matthews BBQ and our division winner was Smokin the Bandit BBQ.

With turn-ins every ½ hr, entries came in fast and furious. Tables were cleared and reset so judges were ready to tackle the pork rib division. Filling out the top five were Jeremy Smith and his Carolina Q team in 5th. Jon Davis and Butch Richardson of Pork Dynasty were a strong 4th. The rookie team of Double Trouble Backyard BBQ again in the top five with a 3rd place rib finish and taking the 2nd place spot was Jim Sasso of 2nQue Crew, with the top spot in ribs going to Ryan Pang of Bad S BBQ Team.

The People’s Choice division was up next. Teams turned in six pork ribs to random judges selected from the crowd (and man were they excited) and the people selected Smokers Wild BBQ as the People’s Choice Champion.

In 2014 the NSBC added a Chili and salsa division so all the chili heads were represented. Jethro Ross was our head Chili judge and had several ICS judges on hand. Kicking off the top five were TMC BBQ in 5th, Bone Rubbin BBQ and Big Kahuna finished tied for 4th, 3rd place went to D&D BBQ, Mary Odor and her Big O’s BBQ was 2nd and taking the title was the current California state Chili Champion Gina D’Arcangelo. A job well done by all! In the Salsa Division judging was done people’s choice style and the people said that Mary Odor and her Big O’s BBQ team was tops in Salsa.

After the smoke had cleared and teams had moved into the casino event center it was time to see who would take the early lead in the NSBC Series, rounding out the overall top 5 was Rolling Bones BBQ with consistent finishes all day in 5th. 4th overall was Pork Dynasty followed by Bad S BBQ in 3rd place. 2nd went to Smokin the Bandit BBQ and your early leader in the NSBC series was BBQ Hazard. It was a great event with a few glitches but we are ready to move on to round # 2, the 50th anniversary BBQ Bash at Boomtown Casino in Reno.
