As of 01/05/2011

ANOTHER RECORD YEAR FOR CBBQA FUND RAISING!

The great members of the California BBQ Association have done it again.

We work year long raising funds for numerous California Children's Charities.

Our non profit group hands over thousands each year. We surpassed the 2009

record of 58k with a 2010 amount of of over 70k and still growing as new totals

are still pending.

We conduct BBQ classes, help charities sell BBQ at events, and lend a

hand whenever we can to help fund so many Children's charities statewide.

The CBBQA also supports many other charities that are not listed here including

but not limited to Troop charities.

CBBQA Advanced BBQ Judging Class

January 10, 2015

By Donna Fong

Eleven months ago, the CBBQA Judging committee members met and our 2007 President, Thom Emery shared with us one of his longtime goals: a continuing education program for judges. It sounded like a great idea but hardly any classes existed. Someone in the group had enough chutzpah to suggest that we create one. The committee is full of brave souls because we all agreed to develop a curriculum and teach an advanced judges class in a way that no one else had done before.

On a gorgeous Saturday morning inside the historic Alameda Elks Club, eight BBQ instructors with backgrounds as judges taught the following modules: Roles and Responsibilities, History of BBQ, Advancements & Future of Judging, Promoter Perspectives, BBQ Anatomy, Ranch to Table, Regional Flavor Profiles, Appearance, Taste, Texture and Judging Myths. It was hard to fit that much material into a one day class, but it made more logistical sense since had to teach the same course in two locations 420 miles apart. With half of the instructors split between San Francisco and Los Angeles, we had to do this in one class.

Thanks to the combined efforts of instructors, volunteers and the support of the CBBQA board members, we had an amazing inaugural class. High enrollment proved to me that there is an audience for advanced education. It was more work than I had imagined but we were thanked repeatedly throughout the day by our students. Thank you to our instructors: Kelly McIntosh, Aaron Staines, Scott Simpson, Ben Lobenstein, Donna Fong, Abel Tirre, Amber Stipicevich, Harry Soo and Robert Bass were outstanding. Special shout-out to Kathleen McIntosh, our emcee and to Thom Emery for inspiring us to teach something collectively that we would not have been able to do otherwise. With 72 students enrolled in Southern California and a growing waitlist, we look forward to teaching it all again in two weeks.

Information on next class date:

January 24, 2015 , 9-5pm at UC Riverside, 900 University Ave, Riverside, CA 92521
