Inaugural Wild West BBQ Bash

The Family Care Network's Wild West BBQ Bash

made possible with support from the City of Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department

Event Overview

The Family Care Network’s 1st annual Wild West BBQ Bash is a family-friendly event with something for everybody. The public is invited to enjoy live entertainment and world-class BBQ as teams from Santa Maria and around the state compete for the Wild West crown! The event will also feature live music, great food from local vendors, and family activities such as face painting, performances, balloon animals, games, and more. Admission is free and all proceeds raised at the event will benefit foster and high-needs children and families served by the Family Care Network!

The Family Care Network at a Glance

The Family Care Network is a private, nonprofit children and families services provider. Established in 1987 for the purpose of creating family-based treatment programs as an alternative to group home or institutional care for children and youth, the agency now operates multiple, accredited programs designed to strengthen and preserve families and individuals. The agency has grown to serve over 2,000 foster and high-needs children, youth and families annually in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties.

Santa Maria Style BBQ

“Santa Maria Style BBQ” consists of barbecued tri-tip (cut from the lower rear end of the sirloin before the round), salsa, Pinquito beans, toasted French bread, and green salad and has been called by Sunset Magazine, the "best barbecue in the world" and the California’s Visitor’s Guide raves tri-tip is the "number one food not to miss while visiting California." It is the featured cuisine at all festive occasions, both public and private, and so thoroughly ingrained in local culture that it truly has become a way of life.

This competition is dedicated to the promotion of BBQ as a culinary art and sport as well as the historical preservation of the Santa Maria Style BBQ which brought the Latino and Caucasian settlers of California’s Central Coast together. The event celebrates the unique relationship of the Caucasian ranchers and Latino vaqueros in the 19th century through culinary efforts such as Santa Maria Style BBQ and the ongoing community established by these groups.

IBCA Rules of Competition

Teams will compete in a BBQ competition sanctioned by the International Barbeque Cookers Association (IBCA) to ensure a standardized fair competition. This sanctioning body serves as such for BBQ competitions throughout the state and country and will provide a Head Judge to ensure IBCA rules are adhered to.

All meats must be cooked on-site without pre-cooking or marinating. Cooking must be done in as sanitary manner as possible. No two teams can share the same pit. Each team is allowed only one entry per category. Any BBQ Pit that is inherently portable by design used to BBQ or grill is acceptable. Gas or electricity may be used for starting the combustion of wood or wood products but not to complete cooking

A more complete list of IBCA rules is available at www.ibcabbq.org. Questions regarding IBCA rules can be directed to Kelly McIntosh at bbqjudge@gmail.com.
