That's what I figured. Has anyone toyed with the idea of jotting down the scores before adressing the teams?

If I understand your question correctly, that is the procedure. The entries are brought to the judging table three at a time. The judges then score and log their entry. Once completed, each judge speaks to why they scored each entry the way the did. It is educational for the judges as well, particulary when their scores are very different from another judges. Scores cannot be changed once recorded. The purpose for scoring three at a time is designed to keep the entries from sitting too long.

So the judging is in a sense blind? Do they know the team they are judging before they put down their scores?

They do not know who's box they are judging until it is time for the review process. During the review, the team still has control with the option to ID their box and exchange dialog, or just listen to the comments and remain anonymous.

So it looks like we have eight teams claiming a spot so far this year...

Wine With Swine
Los MexiQtioners
Too Ashamed To Name
Bowling Over Pigs
Canyon Riders
Bang-A-Drum BBQ
Pig Pimp'n BBQ
Smokey Luv BBQ
WHO'S NEXT???

We also have eight confirmed CBJ's/MCBJ's for this year. If your interested in judging please get your application turned in, as we had a waiting list last year. Last year all judges were CBJ's with several CBJ/pitmasters in the mix too. Interested CBJ's should have experience and be willing and able to articulate their scores and not afraid of speaking their mind to the teams. This open format judging is a great learning tool for both teams and judges. We will be using the standard KCBS format for scoring. I've heard from many teams about how MUCH they learned from watching the process of the judges inspecting the boxes to the handling and eating of the entries. Besides the event is a kids fundraiser and a lot of fun!

email or PM Mark Brown or myself for an application to cook or judge

Still have room for teams this year. Get your applications in...

Looks like Mark is still waiting to hear back from and/or applications from ...

Porktera BBQ
Royal Smoking Hot BBQ
RobZ BBQ
Friendship 210
Barts Blaz'n Q
Bad Boyz of BBQ
Cecil's Smok'n BBQ
Holey Smokes
Jimmy Bones
Smoke House 10 (actually... Dave has expressed an interest in judging this event. Still waiting for his application)

Currently working on the details of turn in times with Ben. Will update soon. Trying to make this event not so dependent on how to do 1/2 hour turn-ins (a la KCBS) but ensuring that no box waits to get to a table AND every team gets the opportunity to receive appropriate feedback from the judges! This event is open judging, not blind and it's important that teams get the opportunity for the judges comments. One of last years' teams learned so much about their chicken entry that their chicken scores soared after this learning experience open judging event.
