The 2012 Sam's Club contest series was just announced.

One date in California set for San Diego. Nothing for NorCal this year.

Also, the Regional for the San Diego event is the same weekend as Morgan Hill and Long Beach.

New this year - teams will ONLY be allowed to enter ONE local contest. Husband & Wife teams who try to double up will both get DQ'ed.

I got invited to Vegas last year for finishing 11th overall, and I think the 13th team ended up going in the end. I had already purchased $1300 worth of tri-tip for Morgan Hill, so it was too late to change plans.

I have mixed feelings. Love that San Diego and Vegas are options for Southern California teams. I think Northern California got a raw deal. Regional on the day of Morgan Hill and Long Beach, heck.

I have been looking forward to the Sam's contests in 2012 because biggest BBQ related mistake I have ever made was to drop out of the Sac. contest last year. With LV and/or SD much closer than Sac.,it would be great to compete in either one of those. However, were I to be fortunate to move forward, I would not pass up the Long Beach contest to drive to ABQ. I firmly believe if one enters they should be willing to go all the way. I'm not willing and therefore will not enter.

I hear you there. Finishing 11th in Sac I figured I had no chance of moving on and forged ahead with my plans for Morgan Hill. Then about a week or so before Vegas I got the email, but my plans were set.

I don't see myself driving 8 hours to hope to make it to drive 18 hours when there is a contest on the same day 15 mins from my house.

It's going to be interesting to see who signs up for the Region 1 local events.

Yup agreed and the 1st place category pay out has shrunk considerably. I might just chill this year because, I have aspirations of doing Long Beach.

I applaud your thoughts but wish you would still compete as it is better to compete against the best and you will be missed.

Thanks for the kind words Brandon.

I waited overnight for all the teams who want to go all the way to get in. Now, I've signed up and will be treating it as a normal KCBS contest that is 2 hours from home. I didn't think so few teams would be signed up. I guess the travel to ABQ combined with 2 contests in CA that weekend has slowed the interest. Whatever the results, I will not move forward and will compete at Long Beach instead.

We were seriously thinking about signing up this year but with the recent rumors of gas prices hitting 5 bucks a gallon and the distance we have to travel just for a local we have decided to pass. Las Vegas may be our one and only road trip out of the PNW this year...good luck to all who signed up!

I have a friend who judged one of the Sam's contests held this year. Here is some of what he sent in an e-mail.

" The "reps" went on and on about how this was 'competition' bbq and therefore automatically an 8 or 9, with the possible exception of a 7 might be "allowed" for appearance. They didn't explicitly say this, but when somebody makes the statement all of this is going to be an 8 or 9 ten times in the judges meeting, what should we think. And looking back on it, those were my scores matched that, (8 or 9), except I did give a 7 for taste."

Based on last weekend's scores in TX, I'm not sure that those instructions were given at every Sam's contest. My opinion, it would be sad if judges are not allowed (or discouraged) to use the entire range of numbers.
