The guy heading up this project for the Rotary Club is Frank Walsh. Frank is a good customer of Eggs by the Bay. He as competed at the Winchester contest in San Jose for a couple of years now. Frank is an active Rotary Club member here in Santa Clara.

Looks like there is a conflict in schedule for this event, they will reapproach KCBS with another date for 2012.

Stay tuned.

Assume the conflict is local and not with KCBS, correct?

Yes, Ben has advised John that Rancho will be that weekend so I have told the Rotary club should move to avoid a schedule conflict. May be earlier in the year, may be later. They should know in a few weeks.

I called Ben to confirm last night and he said it was, so the SC Rotary club will have to adjust accordingly.

I applaud the flexibility of the Santa Clara people even though they are on the KCBS schedule already with no guarantee Ben/Rick are even going to ask for KCBS sanctioning. The SC contest was looking good for my one trip up north this year to compete (may go up to judge a few if 50 other people dont' beat me to it). I look forward to seeing the revised date.

Glad to see a bay area contest. I thought we all agreed that Rancho Cordova was going to be never mentioned again. :)

I believe there must be some kind of misunderstanding going on. I am sure Ben will chime in shortly.

Ric,

Is Rancho the same weekend of Santa Clara this year? If it is, they will move their event. The nice people at the Santa Clara Rotary club would simply like to know, as you guys have first dibs on the weekend from last year.

Whatever weekend is chosen this will be a great addition to the Northern CA contest calendar.
Hopefully the Santa Clara Rotary will put out a challenge to other Rotary clubs.
I know the Dixon Rotary has been quite competitive with their BBQ talents!

Smitty,

When we spoke last week, I informed you we just didn’t know the status of Rancho at that time.

This all started with a discussion I had with the ToY commish on (date) regarding how to handle the potential problem of a promoter claiming a date for their event which was previously used by another promoter. This discussion was based on the proposed new 2012 ToY rules, etc.

The discussion went to dates like the 4th of July - which weekends are a moving target, and how to “protect” the previous year’s contests. This lead to the question of which weekend would be ‘claimed” by Rancho – I suggested since the contest actually took place on July 3rd 2011, that it would be the weekend BEFORE the 4th, but I could see it argued either way. Keep in mind this was a discussion on proposed ToY rule changes. I made it clear, both in that discussion, and in a following discussion Smitty that as of that time I/we had NOT talked with the folks from Rancho about their plans for 2012.

As a courtesy to other promoters, and to offer the best event possible for contestants, seasoned promoters confer on dates before going public. This is done to avoid conflicts and avert going public to solve a potential conflict, what’s to be gained by that? Although you chose not to extend this courtesy to us, we moved forward with our efforts to resolve this matter. After playing a bit of holiday phone tag we spoke with the people at Rancho. Rancho’s All American 4th of July festival for 2012 will be on July 3-4, so this will not be a conflict for the Santa Clara event.

We see no reason for you to move your date and wish you the best of success. We also hope you will work more closely with your fellow promoters in the future to avoid these kinds of conflicts.

Thank you for your clarification.

It appears Santa Clara will be moving their contest date.
