Who can be in the Rookie ToY race?

4.05 - Rookie Team Award
The Rookie Team Award will be presented to the rookie team that scores the most points in the overall category during the contest year (using the same point accruals defined above). Points in individual meat categories do not count towards the Rookie Team Award.

A rookie team is led by a head cook who:

*prior to this contest year, has never been head cook at a sanctioned, professional-level competition, and
*prior to this contest year, has not assisted a team (in any capacity) at more than two sanctioned, professional-level competitions.
Sanctioned, professional-level competition excludes KCBS competitor series, "backyard" events, and any other contests specifically designated as amateur.

Any team wishing to be considered for rookie status must make a request to be placed on the rookie list by midnight of the turn-in morning of their first qualifying contest of the contest year. The request should be made in writing (email is acceptable) to the ToY Commissioner. If the ToY Commissioner is absent from the actual competition, a request can be accepted by any member of the CBBQA Board of Directors. The BoD will confirm which applicants qualify.

Rookie teams remain eligible for all other ToY category and overall awards regardless of the number of contests they compete in.

No, had you declared your rookie status you would have been a rookie team last year.

I have now posted Rookie eligibility on the first post of this thread.

Hi Bill,

Here are the ToY rules that define eligibility for Rookie teams:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  • prior to this contest year, has not assisted a team (in any capacity) at more than two sanctioned, professional-level competitions.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If your team meets the criteria then you're a ToY Rookie. However, from what you mentioned in your post, it looks like having cooked those two events in 2009 will mean you're no longer Rookie eligible.

Someone please correct me if I am incorrect.

Vince, last year I only cooked one competition (Clear Lake). How do we determine head cook? Our team was a three way partnership, each paying a third of the entry and each persons product was turned in for judging. I'm not sure if I will compete enough for it to matter but I am curious if I would qualify as a rookie. Thanks.

I think this covers your question John.

John, who was listed as the Head Cook on the entry form that you submitted for the contest? By my understanding of the rules, that person would no longer be eligible as a 2010 Rookie but the two other team members would be eligible as 2010 Rookies, assuming that they meet condition number two as listed in the ToY rules.

You had me sweating it John. I figured with all your extra free time, you must be able to churn out really good BBQ in your sleep.

Oh, and that's CrazyQ, with a capital C and a capital Q. Hopefully you'll hear it called enough this year that you'll remember the name. :D
