Not sure where to post...some sections won't let me.
Anywho, I'm new here so Hi everybody.
I'm a Q'er from way back...grew up in Texas (don't hate me)...I use to cook/smoke
on a Bandera until I moved out to Monterey, California.
Now I use a cheaper version to smoke meat...a Kingsman.
But it's just not the same.
My question is where can I find/buy a new pit?
Thanks for any help....

Howdy Meat. Your post was moved to the introductions section, where new folks can say hi.

Hopefully, one of the folks near you will chime in with a local source for a pit

One good bet would be to go to http://tvwbb.infopop.cc/groupee and order a WSM. Lots of folks here use them and the Amazon price is about as good as you are likely to find.

If the WSM isn't to your liking, you can also try the Big Green Egg. Darry Smith is the dealer up here in Santa Clara and is a CBBQA board member. You can send him a private message through this site, but more than likely, he'll see this post and reply on his own.

I use Eggs myself and would definitely recommend them, especially if you are looking to put one extremely versatile pit in your backyard that is efficient, easy to use, and will last for multiple lifetimes.

At any rate, there are certainly other options, but those are two pretty good choices for you.

Good luck!

Matt

Welcome aboard, Meat. (just fyi, we use real names here)

What size pit are you looking for? All suggestions above were good. If you are looking for something a little bigger, I believe there is a Tucker distributor up your way. Don't have one myself, but the ones that do seem to like them.

I would also keep an eye on Craigslist, been known to see pits pop on on there occassionally.

Once again, welcome, hope you can try to make one of our events.

Bill

Hey Bill...real name is Gary.
I live in the Monterey area and grew up using a Bandera...(an upright smoker).
I wasn't sure or couldn't find anyone in Ca. that build pits.
Like I said before I have a upright Kingsman but it just isn't the same.

Hi everyone...my real name is Gary.
MEAT is what I call most of my friends so I thought I would use it.
Here is a pic of what I'm currently using...would love to have
something bigger and better. When I lived in Texas I had a Bandera
but there just wasn't enough room for it with the move.
So, if anyone knows of a good pit builder please send them my way.
And I hope to learn more about BBQing from you guys as I go along.

ps...I'm doing a few ribs mid-week...more porn to come.

Hey Gary, do you plan on competing or strictly back yard? Have you considered the Backwoods / Stumps / Spicewine type cookers?

Go. to www.custombbqtrailers.com and see what you think. They are in Fresno, Calif. I have heard that they have quit making pits and are selling off inventory. The smokers are identical to "Bushrod" smokers. I have owned one and used it hard for 15 years. Ask for Durbin Breckinridge

Strictly backyard cooking for me so I'm not looking to take out a second mortgage...lol
So if I could get a good upright smoker for around $1000 I would be pleased.

Welcome Gary, this is a fun place to hang out, and even if you don't want to compete, there are a few backyard events that only cost you the meat you cook. They are a lot of fun, so you might want to reconsider, plus it's a great way to improve on your BBQ talents.

Here is a pic of my Backwoods Chubby; it was right around $1,000. It will hold 9 racks of ribs, or 4 pork butts. It's a great little cooker. I mainly use it for backyard cooking and camping; it's fairly easy to move around since it only weighs 120 lbs. I put it on a cargo carrier on the back of the motorhome instead of dragging the BBQ trailer if we are only going camping. The local dealer even dropped it off at my house, and that's what I call service.

Yeah Scott mentioned something about those smokers in a earlier post...they're pretty sharp looking.

You can always do a UDS. Here is a great site with directions.
