I just sent up prayers for Monica and Jay. This is definitely a loss to the BBQ community.

Jay we loved Monica and we love you man. If there is anything we can help with, just say the word.

I choose to remember the fun times I had sitting and talking to Monica and I will celebrate her life.

I remember the first time we met Jay and Monica. They were our next door neighbors at Four Q's very first contest: the 2006 Autry. Four Q rolled into to camp with waaaay to much gear - our newness showed terribly. Jay and Monica were the consummate veterans - they chided us rookies gently, and welcomed us into the community despite ourselves.

In typical Otis & the Bird fashion, they worked quietly and under the radar next to their Lang cooker. Relaxed, unassuming, and professional, they won GC that weekend. Had my team known this quiet duo was a BBQ juggernaut, we would have paid more attention to what Jay and Monica were doing.

Since then, they've been gracious friends and most generous with their knowledge. Like everyone else here, I looked forward to their presence at contests in the hopes that Jay would be frying up some chicken in his Dutch oven. I'd always wonder if they brought their dog Otis, or left him in Arizona. In the short time we'd known them, they became friends that I'd look forward to seeing at our California contests.

Godspeed, Monica. I'll remember the good times we had, and miss you.

To borrow a phrase from a BBQ team name; Cancer Sucks.

I mourn with you, Jay. You are in my prayers, Buddy.

I am so saddened. Reflecting on Shuji's post, I also remember our very first competition with Jay and Monica next to us. From that date on I always looked forward to time spent with her. I have you and your family in my prayers.
