If you haven't already noticed there is a new KCBS Certified BBQ Judges class in Santa Clara on June 7th.
Information can be found on the KCBS website.

Wow. Apparently the class will have a class of up to 50. If that fills, they might have a second class of an additional 50! Do we really have enough contests in northern CA to warrant another 100 CBJs?

Seems like an advance class would help too, eh?

Hello; My name is Steve Masters. I'm a lover of great barbecue and a Hospitality Management student at Mission College in Santa Clara, CA.

On June 7th there will be a KCBS Certified Barbecue Judge’s Class at Mission College in Santa Clara, CA. After completing this class you will be certified to judge at BBQ competitions.

There will be potentially two classes on June 7th in the Mission Hospitality Building. The first class of 50 will start at 8:00 AM. If that class fills up we will have another class of up to 50 from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM.

If you are already a KCBS member the cost is $65. For Non-KCBS members the cost is $100.

If you don’t want to become a Certified Judge there are plenty of opportunities to volunteer.

Maybe a good number of the people taking the class are hoping to be cooks rather than judges and they are just getting some background information. Anyone who took these classes have an idea about that? If they all want to be judges, then getting into a contest nowadays sure will be tough.

I just took the class in Riverside and I was accompanied by my wife and a friend (another cook)...my goal in becoming a CBJ and taking the class was more for competitive cooking intel and perspective, and I am confident that many people in the room were in the same boat. That's not to say that we (or I) are not interested in judging a comp or two, but being a CBJ is not how I intend to spend my weekends.

I know several people take the class to try and understand the criteria for good barbecue, without planning on being a judge. Several people I have talked to are taking the class because they want to be cooks or are cooks and want to be

I agree Bryan. Numerous people have told me they are taking the class to be successful in the competitions.
