With pork butt and brisket turned in, we began on our ribs as the head PNWBA judge approached our booth and called my name. I thought to myself, “Oh oh! This can’t be good.” As us cooks are fond to say, “When you see the Head Judge before the end of a contest, run like Hell!”

Harry, sorry to hear about your metal detection incident. Our team had a similar episode at a practice comp, thank the stars, this year. Better luck down the road.

But need to ask.. was the first time "rookie" judge wrong?

The judge got it "right", but the rules that say a speck of foil counts as a "foreign object" are questionable. A more experienced judge probably wouldn't have even thought twice about it, let alone reported it.

So, to further clarify, the foreign object rule is there to prevent teams from adding anything other than meat and approved garnish to the box. It creates a level playing field so teams to add anything "fancy" to enhance the look of their entry. It is also useful in preventing marking. A speck of foil that is hidden or you need a magnifying glass to see isn't there to enhance the look of the entry. It is clearly not intentional so it seems extreme to me to DQ a team for a simple mistake/oversight that has no advantage to them. The judge was technically right, but the rule is too harsh IMO, and a more experienced judge would probably understand the intent of the rule and not consider this to be a violation since it was such a small and insignificant speck.

I am sure some may disagree with my opinion on this, but I know a lot of teams that agree that this rule and, more importantly the punishment for violating it, is too harsh.

Any judge rookie or experienced should call table captain about foil remaining as with raw chicken found, I have bit into enough raw chicken judging to get 20 people sick, I also do not want to ingest foil left behind or have it land on a filling. Foil aint part of the entry. Food safety is one reason for rules as they are.

I have had the honor and pleasure to work for Adam and HHBBQ in a few events. The detail they give to turn in boxes is 2nd to none. Based on that it would hard to believe it would be even remotely possible that a team of Harry's caliber would miss something like that. New judge or not. It is what it is.

just to play devils advocate, but if i was putting a marker in my box, i would not make it a big peice, i would make it as small as possible so only the person getting could see it, otherwise, what good would it be if everyone saw it? what if the table judge was the person in on the marking, so now he knows he has the "special box" and lets it go, no DQ. That is whay the rule is there.

Now i know Harry didn't do that, it was an honest mistake, but you know at some place and time someone used a little tiny peice of foil to mark their entry, thus we now have the rule

It is a shame we have to play to the lowest common denominator, but I do get that. I still think the penalty is too harsh, however.

And I also get the food safety issue. I do everything in my power to ensure judges are provided with nothing but very safe, and hopefully delicious BBQ.

Any question about marking or foreign objects is called to the attendion of the table captain and the TC calls over the Rep to make the call so the decision follows a procedures that give the cook the benefit of the doubt and the most experienced judge (Rep) makes the final call.
